Before you start the placement test
This test is here to find the level you are actually at, so we can put you in the right class. It is not an exam you can pass or fail, and there is no advantage in scoring higher than your real level.
What we ask of you
- Work alone
No help from anybody — not a friend, not a family member, not a teacher. If someone is sitting with you, ask them to leave you to it.
- No dictionary, no translator, no AI
No dictionary in print or online, no Google Translate or DeepL, no ChatGPT or any other AI assistant, no browser translation, no grammar checker. Close the other tabs.
- No searching, no notes
Do not look anything up while the test is open, and do not use notes, textbooks or previous answers.
- Give yourself enough time
Sit somewhere quiet where you will not be interrupted, and do the whole test in one go. Rushing it produces a level that is not yours.
- Write properly in the writing task
The written answer should be at least 8 to 14 sentences. A one-line answer tells us nothing, and we cannot place you on it.
- Leave it blank rather than guess wildly
If you genuinely do not know, that is useful information. A lucky guess is not.
What we do with the result
- We use it to recommend a level and a course. That is all.
- It is not a certificate and carries no weight outside LangNation.
- It is not shared with anyone outside the school.
- Your teacher may look at it, so they know where you are starting from.
If the level turns out wrong
It sometimes does — a test is a snapshot. Tell your teacher in the first week and we will move you, at no cost. That is much easier than discovering it in week six.
Honesty
We cannot watch you take this test, and we are not going to try. We are asking you to be straight with us because it is your time and your money at stake.
If a placement turns out to be far from what the test suggested, we will simply retest you in class and place you where you actually are.
Not sure which level you need?
Tell us your goal and we will recommend a course and a start date. No obligation.
